My name is Freek Smit, and for a long time, my life looked successful from the outside.
Titles. Careers. Achievements.
People saw stability — engineering, leadership, business, reputation.
But inside, something very different was happening.
There was a time when I lived in what I now call an invisible prison.
Not a physical place — a mental and emotional one.
It was shaped by the quiet, constant thoughts that followed me everywhere:
“You’re not enough.”
“You’re going to fail.”
“You don’t deserve more.”
“You’re too much… and still not enough.”
I didn’t recognise these thoughts as a prison — they were familiar, almost logical.
But they controlled everything I did.
